A photograph is both a pseudo-presence and a token of absence. Like a wood fire in a room, photographs - especially those of people, of distant landscapes and faraway cities, of the vanished past - are incitements to reverie. -Susan Sontag

Most of us have seen Margaritte's "The Treachery of Images", and contemplated the idea that 'this is not a pipe', but merely an image of one. Photography lives in that reality: that images are merely impressions of subjects. It is important to consider that all of these are images that represent the object of a leaf, yet none actually are the leaf. All we can hope to accomplish is to explain something about our subject to the audience. A photo will only ever be a tribute or reference to that subject, therefore we must take care in the choices we make as picture makers, because we carry the responsibility to tell the truth and the stories of our subjects.

Truth can realistic representation or it may be in details that only become evident  because of the artistic choices of the photographer.

The aim must be to construct a context for a photograph, to construct it with words, to construct it with other photographs, to construct it by its place in an ongoing text of photographs and images. -John Berger in About Looking
